I am interested in working in the spaces where two things meet: science and art, human landscape and nature, words and images. The advent of AI raises questions and possibilities regarding creativity and art, and creates a new space where technology and hand-making meet. I am intrigued by the potential of AI as a tool, while maintaining concerns about what the use of AI means to authenticity in artwork. I have begun to explore this using DALL-E-2.
I believe this is a true collaboration with AI: I spend hours honing text prompts for the AI, run prompts repeatedly to generate different images, curate sets of images that resonate with me, verify that the images are indeed original, and respond to the images with my own stitched paper artwork. Virtual images become physical artwork in the real world.
AI is now a part of our lives. Perhaps we might add it to our toolboxes and explore how it can help us see anew ourselves and the world.
I asked AI to depict what it "thinks" the effects of climate change will be on the landscape, specifically the Indiana forests that I love. I chose 18 images to use as inspiration for my original stitched paper artwork.
